Hunger Games mania has struck at Jenkins Middle School! Everyone is reading, or getting ready to read The Hunger Games. Written by Suzanne Collins, this book is an epic bestseller and a story you will never forget. Here’s a brief description taken from goodreads.com
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister Primrose, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
Teachers are so excited about this book that several of them have decided to read it with all of their students! All four sixth grade Language Arts teachers have decided it’s a “must read” and will be starting the book very soon. Thanks to our administrators, these teachers will each have a classroom set of The Hunger Games so each student will be able to read along with their teachers. These teachers are Mrs. Mikell, Mrs. McDowell, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Symonds.
After spending the day in the library with Mrs. Gastelum, our library teacher, and listening to her share a book talk about The Hunger Games with students, Mrs. Connelly, an 8th Grade Language Arts teacher, has also decided to read the book with her classes. She will also be getting a classroom set for students. When her students were told they would be reading it in class, many of them expressed excitement and thanked her for making that decision.
Currently the library has 20 copies, but all are checked out and there is a waiting list of over 40 students. However, the books are being read so fast that many students find they don’t have to wait long to get their hands on a copy. The book is also available online and can be accessed through the JMS Card Catalog . Search for “Hunger Games” and then click the one with the “ebook” symbol next to the title. On the next screen, click the “Read Online” button. If the book is not currently being read, it can be accessed immediately. If it is unavailable, check back later.
In case you haven’t heard, The Hunger Games has been made into a much-anticipated movie. Mrs. Gastelum has made arrangements for a field trip to the local theater to watch the movie on March 23rd, opening day! Students and teachers who read The Hunger Games will be invited to the movie field trip. The cost will be $10 which covers admissions, popcorn, a drink and bus cost.
